Martin Luther King, Jr.: Inspirational Quotes

martin luther king, jr.Serving as an activist, humanitarian, civil rights leader, and pastor — Martin Luther King, Jr. played an essential role in his generation and future ones to come. In 1983, Martin Luther King, Jr. day was created to honor the powerful legacy he left.

And although MLK’s life and the civil rights movement may seem as a thing of the past, his words are still relevant and alive in today’s world. With protest proclaiming that “Black Lives,” or “All Lives Matter,” in an age where war is prevalent, and crime and injustice always making the headlines, we can still hold fast to King’s teachings.

Knowing this, the legislation enacted Martin Luther King Day of Service in which people are encouraged to make January 19th “a day on, not a day off” to serve and give back to our communities.

To celebrate and honor King, here are several inspirational — and perhaps motivational — truths and quotes he said during his lifetime:

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.”

The quality, not the longevity, of one’s life is what is important”

“If a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.”

“There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right.” Martin Luter King, Jr. Quote

“We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.”

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”
