For years, I struggled with being discontent in my life; always looking for the next best thing. I found it very difficult to enjoy where I currently was in life. You see, discontentment weighed heavy on me, so much that I found myself outside of the will of God (several times) and making things happen on my own. I can be a bit impatient so when things don’t happen right away, I am figuring a way to get it done.
That didn’t get me anywhere
Through the past several months, God has been dealing with me on being content and enjoying my current season. I’ve tried numerous times to pray for things to happen. It didn’t happen because my motives were always wrong and focused on my selfish desires. God wouldn’t move me to the promises that he had for me until I adopted a new mindset: having the mind of Christ.
When I think of discontentment, I think of the brief story of Sarah which is found in Genesis 16:1-15. Sarah became discontent with not being able to bare her husband, Abraham, any children. So what did she do? She took matters into her own hands by giving her husband permission to be intimate with her maidservant Hagar to have a son. You see, Sarah decided to jump ahead of God and make a situation happen.
There are many times that God tells us something and because we do not see the fruit of it immediately, we make our own plans. We focus our time and energy on how to get it sooner which hinders us from hearing God.
Brothers and Sisters, we have to learn how to rest in God. Whatever situation you are praying for, continue to press into the Lord with all of your might and don’t stop! God is for you not against you.
Jeremiah 29:11 reads, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This scripture should give you a great hope to continue seeking God with your whole heart and to know that HIS plans are far better than you could think of. He knows what you need and will supply ALL of your needs according to his riches in glory (Philippians 4v19).
Everything will happen in his timing. Learn to rest in God and fight against discontentment.
