I wonder how many blessings I’ve missed out on because I haven’t asked God for them. Many of us say we want to live the abundant life; we want that life Jesus came to give us. We read our Bibles, we pray to God, yet we don’t see a huge change. We cannot understand why we don’t have life more abundantly.
Last week, I woke up one morning, and before I got out of bed, I prayed differently than how I normally do. I asked God to bless me and not just the regular “God bless me with joy or peace” or “to have a good day” kind of blessing. I asked God to bless me beyond measure, to send every blessing He had for me that day. And, in addition to that, I asked Him to let no one, not even myself, hinder a single one from coming.
Well, you may have guessed what happened. Before the evening arrived, I had received more blessings than I had the entire week. I don’t know why I was surprised, but God didn’t send me just any blessing. All of them were huge beyond measure. God always exceeds our expectations. Now, as I write this, I’ve realized that there are some blessings we’ll only receive by asking.
It’s probably the reason why James 4:2 reads:
You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. (ESV)
After having that experience, I add that request to my prayer every morning. I’ve also stopped asking God for specific blessings. He knows what I need, so if I ask Him to provide, He’ll do so however He chooses.
I think we limit ourselves by asking God only for specific blessings. If you ask God for just joy and peace that day, He’ll provide it. However, if you ask Him to bless you with a good day and bless you beyond measure, you don’t limit yourself to just the blessings of “joy and peace”.
Today, I challenge you to ask God for life more abundantly. Ask Him for every blessing He has for you, and watch what He turns your request into!
