A fresh start…anytime

It’s a new year and an opportunity for another fresh start. Moments like these give us another chance to wipe the slate clean and begin again. However, we don’t have to limit it to just the start of a new year. Why not the first of every month, the first day of the week, or every morning when we wake up? Seriously, there are more chances to make that fresh start than you know!

Why Do We Need a Fresh Start?

Before we talk about what we want to do with that “do-over”, I think it is important to examine why we want to do that. If you gathered a group of people together who were all looking to start anew, the reasons why they want to do that will all be different and very personal. They might include:

  • Wanting to escape bad memories;
  • Needing a change of scenery;
  • Ridding yourself of a dark cloud or failure;
  • Feeling restless and burnt out; or,
  • Having a poor attitude about everything.

But more often than not, when you got right down to the heart of the matter, the real reason is that something in life has gone completely off kilter and they were all looking to regain some balance. Whatever the impetus, the choice is always yours to start over, and you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to do so. America’s Sweetheart, Mary Pickford once said,

You may have a fresh start anytime you choose.

How To Get That Fresh Start

Moving to a new town. Sometimes you really need to start over, especially if you’re current location keeps reminding you of all the bad things that have been in your life. Fresh starts in new cities can be very cleansing, but keep in mind the reasons that you are leaving. Starting over in a place you have never been before means you are leaving behind friends and family that have been there for you your whole life. I am an advocate for change, but you do not want to jump from the frying pan into the fire. Check out a few places first and make an informed decision. Maybe all you need to do is move to the other side of town where no one knows you.

Cleaning out the old to bring in some new. If a drastic move is not your thing, then perhaps completely cleaning out your space and starting with new things will help freshen your life. Over time, we grow and our tastes change. There is nothing wrong with updating your style and the scenery you’ve lived in since you moved out of your parent’s house. By breathing new life into your home, you will automatically breathe new life into yourself.

Power down and read. Technology brought the world the means to stay connected 24/7. Unfortunately, it also brought us a means for our subconscious to be exposed to every negative thing in the universe. For some of us, it is simply too much to handle causing anxiety, restlessness and stress. We are putting ourselves on information overload and need to stop! We waste too much time on electronics and less time on the things that should really matter. How much can one person take? We don’t have to put ourselves in this situation. Why not try powering down for a change? Pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read, or go outside and enjoy nature. We don’t have to be connected all the time. Take time just for yourself and concentrate on you instead of what is on your phone.

Take control and accept the all of the responsibility of your life. It is so easy to blame someone else for all your problems. Or worse yet, it’s too hard to do something so I just won’t do it and stay in this rut that I am in. Moreover, we have caused ourselves to feel restless and hopeless. It is time to stand up and take control of your life, because truthfully life was never meant to be easy. Quit blaming others for your past mistakes or failures. By accepting responsibility, you maintain the power within yourself. You make it happen and you don’t need to rely on someone else doing it for you.

Believe in yourself. This was the best advice that I ever received. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. It’s that simple. Having confidence is one of the best accessories you will ever own.

You Don’t Have To Wait

Fresh starts do not have to wait for a particular moment. They should happen whenever you want, and be directed toward making yourself feel better inside and out. If that means moving, cleaning out your space of all the unwanted stuff you have collected, or simply taking stock of yourself and realizing that you are so much better than you give yourself credit for, than by all means, make that fresh start today. Find your happiness, bliss or whatever it is that will bring back the joy to your life.

Remember, it is never too late to wipe that slate clean. Go ahead…you deserve it!
